What does Spanda mean?

It is a sanskrit word that refers to the way consciousness moves in waves of contraction and expansion, similar to the ebb and flow of life. It is the way we evolve and grow, the way we heal and the way we experience ourselves as alive.

Given one of my foundational beliefs and experiences is that everything is energy in different forms, and that all we can do in this life is seek to be more conscious with how we move through it, I figured it was time to bring this symbol more central to my work.

I have memories, as a young child, of select moments of absolute awareness; well beyond what became ‘daily life’.  There was an experience I used to have where I would feel both enormous (expanded and gigantic) and also incredibly thin and fine in my structure, as though I could be snapped like a twig. Even though these ideas seem oppositional, I would experience them at the same time.

Now as ‘Adult me’, exploring the realm of meditation, healing, and dynamic consciousness, I find myself recalling and re-experiencing a version of this. There is no English language word or way to easily convey the truest experience of mindful presence aside from… Spanda.

I witness myself in Spanda and I know I am alive.
